Kate Wins Two Portland Music Awards!

January 28, 2010 by Jim

Thanks to her loyal (and internet savvy!) fans for voting last December, Kate won both awards in two categories of the Portland Music Awards. One was for Best Achievement in Jazz, and the other, Best New Artist (no specific genre). Since she was at school in NY, I accepted the awards on her behalf.

It is a shame she couldn't be there to enjoy the excitement of winning. Certainly the crowd would have preferred seeing her on stage picking up the crystal instead of dear old Dad.

as an old old former jazz drummer who, when the beatles hit the usa, worried for the future of jazz, i have taken to watchting younger musicians migrate to jazz. attending the next generation jazz fesitvals over recent years, which is held here in monterey, california, and then discovering super talented young stars as kate, reassures me...the future of jazz is secured. kate is mind boggling for many reasons. he skill and reflexive handling of her instrument, he tonal voice and range and of course, her personality and presence. to be sure, she is success destined. thanks for keeping in touch with me on her progress. congratulations on her awards. it is easy to sense your father's pride and it is so good to see a parent support their child in such a committed way. wishes for continued success. ede sabo

I agree with Mr. Sabo's chracterization of Kate's music & persona above. Kate's musical arrangements of familiar and unfamiliar tunes, her utterly beautiful voice and style of singing (which by now I can recognize from behind the distant hills that it is her singing), and her magnificent way of playing the upright bass (I did not take this instrument as serious foreground instrument until I've seen and heard Kate's playing it), these all make me very fortunate to have been around and see and hear it while I can. CONGRATULATIONS MS. KATE DAVIS. Please continue to save the day for fantastic jazz.

Kate is such a terrific talent and has become an artist that has captured my attention since seeing her at the festival in Silverton last year. I hope she will make many appearances this coming summer here in the Portland area, so I can take other jazz fans to see her and relish her incredible talent
