Dessert was rhubarb compote with marinated strawberries and sweet ginger sorbet, but the real treat was a performance by 19-year-old Kate Davis, a jazz bassist and singer from Portland, Ore., who was discovered by Baryshnikov and played standards mixed with a cover of Rufus Wainwright’s “Leaving for Paris.”

Kate @ The Blue Note on 4/28

Kate's first "solo" gig in NYC is a great opportunity. As part of the Emerging Artist Series, Kate opens for Madeleine Peyroux when she starts her Blue Note run at the end of the month. There are two shows of the 28th. Kate starts at 6:30 and admission obviously gets you into Madeleine's show too. Players with Kate that night include Robert Langslet, piano; Jake Goldbas, drums; and Armand Hirsch, guitar.

Kate Wins Two Portland Music Awards!

Thanks to her loyal (and internet savvy!) fans for voting last December, Kate won both awards in two categories of the Portland Music Awards. One was for Best Achievement in Jazz, and the other, Best New Artist (no specific genre). Since she was at school in NY, I accepted the awards on her behalf.

It is a shame she couldn't be there to enjoy the excitement of winning. Certainly the crowd would have preferred seeing her on stage picking up the crystal instead of dear old Dad.
